Nevertheless, Brown predicted the miniaturization and portability of e-readers.

In an article, Jennifer Schuessler writes, "The machine, Brown argued, would allow readers to adjust the type size, avoid paper cuts and save trees, all while hastening the day when words could be 'recorded directly on the palpitating ether. Schuessler relates it to a DJ spinning bits of old songs to create a beat or an entirely new song as opposed to just a remix of a familiar song. Her idea was to create a device which would decrease the number of books that her pupils carried to school. The final device would include audio recordings, a magnifying glass, a calculator and an electric light for night reading.

However, this work is sometimes omitted; perhaps because the digitized text was a means for studying written texts and developing linguistic concordances, rather than as a published edition in its own right.

All these systems also provided extensive hyperlinking , graphics, and other capabilities. Van Dam is generally thought to have coined the term "electronic book", [18] [19] and it was established enough to use in an article title by Thus in the Preface to Person and Object he writes "The book would not have been completed without the epoch-making File Retrieval and Editing System Hart [ edit ] Despite the extensive earlier history, several publications report Michael S.

Hart as the inventor of the e-book. Seeking a worthy use of this resource, he created his first electronic document by typing the United States Declaration of Independence into a computer in plain text. Early implementations[ edit ] After Hart first adapted the Declaration of Independence into an electronic document in , Project Gutenberg was launched to create electronic copies of more texts - especially books.

Detailed specifications were completed in FY 82, and prototype development began with Texas Instruments that same year.

Four prototypes were produced and delivered for testing in Tests were completed in Peter Kincaid. Harkins and Stephen H. Morriss as inventors. In , Sony launched the Data Discman , an electronic book reader that could read e-books that were stored on CDs. One of the electronic publications that could be played on the Data Discman was called The Library of the Future.

The scope of the subject matter of these e-books included technical manuals for hardware, manufacturing techniques, and other subjects.

Full disclosure, I have a degree in Physics and have been working as a programmer for the last 20 years. I thank the authors for writing this book. It is a very well written book and I am really enjoying reading it. I am only halfway through the book but the tone, the amount of learning and the practical hands-on "programming drills" are all really awesome. It helped to me start reading papers in Quantum Computing and making sense of them.

Great book. Very good book. It presents the topic from a very wide variety of angles. It has the correct level of abstraction: An enjoyable read too. On the downside, I would like to have more information on high-level programming languages for quantum computing.

I also found the "programming drills" pointless. This is a good introductory level presentation for the reader who is a bit rusty on linear algebra. However, it is lacking in that some of the presentations are incomplete. For example, on Simon's algorithm, it is stated that n evaluations are needed, but not demonstrated.

Each evaluation is probabilistic, so the actual number needed varies. No proof is given that the expected value is O n. Taking the same example, no intuition is developed as to why Simon's algorithm works. I've since found other texts that fill in such gaps, but they are much harder to tackle.

This is the best book I have seen, thus far, on this topic for people just familiarizing themselves with quantum computing. Physics students may also appreciate the book as it takes a different, and mathematically much simpler, approach to the foundations of quantum mechanics than the approach found in standard physics textbooks on the topic.

Very good and pedagogical in my point of view. See all 26 reviews. site Giveaway allows you to run promotional giveaways in order to create buzz, reward your audience, and attract new followers and customers.
